São Jorge Castle Features

São Jorge Castle in Lisbon is a historic fortress offering visitors a blend of architectural grandeur, rich history, and stunning views. Here are a few of its key features:

1. Panoramic Views
– The castle sits atop Lisbon’s highest hill in the Alfama district, providing sweeping views of the city, the Tagus River, and the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge. It’s one of the best spots to watch the sunset in Lisbon.

2. Towering Ramparts
– The castle’s walls and towers, including the Tower of Ulysses, are well-preserved and accessible, allowing visitors to walk along the battlements. These offer not only great photo opportunities but also a sense of the castle’s defensive importance.

3. Archaeological Site
– Within the grounds, there is an archaeological site that spans several periods of Lisbon’s history, including remains from the Moorish occupation and even earlier Roman settlements.

4. Garden Courtyards and Peacocks
– The castle grounds feature lush gardens, shaded courtyards, and resident peacocks that wander freely (which we absolutely loved!), adding a serene and slightly whimsical charm to the visit.

5. Camera Obscura
– Located in the Tower of Ulysses, this unique feature uses a periscope system to provide a 360-degree view of Lisbon in real time, offering an educational and interactive experience.

Visiting São Jorge Castle

The castle’s origins date back to the 11th century during Moorish rule, serving as a royal residence and defensive stronghold. After the Reconquista in 1147, it became a vital part of Portugal’s history, hosting royal events and witnessing key historical moments.

Walking through its well-preserved ramparts, towers, and courtyards feels like a journey through time, so make sure to take a guided tour to learn about its history.

We skipped the guided tour and had major regrets!

However, our time there was magical as the sun was starting to go, which made for great lighting to take photos!

Either way, the São Jorge Castle is a must-visit for history buffs, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone looking to soak in Lisbon’s timeless charm. It’s a perfect combination of history, culture, and breathtaking scenery.
