Driving to Glacier National Park
On the road: 387 miles, 6.5 hours from Emigrant, Montana to West Glacier KOA
This is the biggest driving day of the trip. It takes almost six and a half hours to drive from Emigrant, Montana to West Glacier.
The beginning of the drive is a long series of highway roads and it’s nothing special. We made an unplanned stop and toured the town of Bozeman, but we did not stop anywhere. We were mostly looking for a brewery and while there are a few, it was only 11am. Ha!
The next stop wasn’t until a couple of hours into the trip in Phillipsburg, Montana. It was here that I finally got a taste of Montana brewing and enjoyed two Philipsburg Brewing Company drafts!

Now that my dreams were fulfilled, we headed onward past the many small towns ot Montana. The farther we got north, the more beautiful it was. Lush pine tree forests lined the streets and vast mountain tops peaking in the background.
Indeed the drive was long, but it really didn’t feel well over six hours because there was always something to look at. We passed by Seely Lake and the beautiful Swan Lake on our way to the outskirts of Kalispell.
If you’re wondering why we didn’t go directly to Many Glacier, the year is 2020, and Many Glacier is shut down due to COVID-19. We were disappointed we weren’t going to get to explore the east end of the park, but, it is what it is. Next time!
West Glacier KOA Resort
West Glacier KOA is hands down the best campground that I’ve ever been to and it’s not even close. There is a reason why this campground was rated the #1 campground in the United States for the last several years. For me, it was the onsite ice cream shop! But, it wouldn’t take anybody long to figure out why its so highly rated.
The first thing we did after check-in, was unload the car and take a sunset stroll through the grounds. The newly constructed kids pool and adult pool’s are huge. Want to take a dip in the hot tubs, they have those too. Have kids? Let them burn off their energy on the playground. Hungry? Go to the onsite BBQ and breakfast restaurant. The grounds are meticulously groomed. The abundance of flowers, shrubbery and plants were extravagant. The bathrooms, while giving a cabin-esk vibe, are very clean. Our cabin was exactly what we needed and included a heater, a full bed and a fire ring pit outside.
For dinner, we used our trusty George Foreman grill to heat up some spicy chicken burgers. And, as it got darker and the stars were shining bright in the midnight sky, we talked about how far we had come up until now. At this point, the trip had gone extremely smooth, all things considered with the pandemic. We couldn’t have been happier. Oh, here’s that ice cream I was drooling about earlier…

I would give this KOA a 10/10. The grounds were immaculate, the cabin was accommodating and the location was perfect.
Wow three national park, the photos are awesome. Also love the lake view, so much details here..
I would’ve loved to spend at least 3-4 days at each park but USA has limited paid time off to do so. I guess I will just have to go back when time permits!
I love hiking but never been to US parks yet. This summer I am going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and hopefully after this adventure I will start booking trips to US destinations.
I’ve yet to hike a National Park outside the USA but I hope to soon! Mount Kilimanjaro sounds like a great adventure, are you going to photograph or vlog, or just pay attention to the hike?? lol
Wow awesome landscape, love the photos.
Such a wonder of nature..
This all looks so good. I haven’t been but this is making me want to go to Jackson hole. Siobhan ♡ | Vegan Babe Life
What an amazing road trip!! Grand Teton all too often gets overshadowed by Yellowstone but look at those photos!
Grand Teton does not get enough love, that’s for sure! We could’ve spent a few more days there as there was still plenty left to do after two days.
