The world of drones is in an exciting state, but flying comes with a lot of risk and responsibility. We live in a time where consumer drones are very affordable. There are two sides to this story though. The good, new drone products and technology are rapidely being developed and released. The bad, consumers who are not responsible are killing the hobby for the rest of us now that drones have hit the mainstream market and have come way down in price.

Side note, It’s important to follow FAA laws and always fly with caution and common sense. As a drone enthusiast, I don’t want the FAA to keep cracking down on laws and make flying illegal in the future, we are already VERY limited in where and how we can fly.

Now, that being said, DJI has announced today that they have released the Mavic 2 Zoom & Mavic 2 Pro. DJI has now corned the market with all of their consumer drone options. When I was looking for a drone, portability and video quality were my biggest concerns.

I have had my DJI Mavic Pro drone for over a year now and it’s been fantastic. Honestly, I wish I had more chances to fly it but I’m limited by FAA laws, my geography and lifestyle. The video and picture quality cannot be beat for it’s price. The drone practically flies itself and its super easy to get the hang of, I couldn’t be more happy with my purchase.

Mavic Pro 2

DJI built the two new drones off of the Mavic platform and added a bunch of new features. Albeit, they split the features in two and are releasing two drones instead of one drone, with all the features because of course they would (Insert not amused face here). I get it, it’s good for business and the future products to not put all your eggs in one basket. However, consumers are going to question if they want more versatility or better quality. At first glance you can’t tell a different between the two in video quality but upon further review you can see that the Mavic 2 Pro has a more clear, focused and vibrant picture and video quality. On the flip side, the Mavic 2 Zoom lets you zoom in to get that close shot. This is key if you cannot get close to your subject. So, for example you want to capture a historic monument or archeological sight…the new Mavic 2 Zoom lets you still capture the moment without breaking the laws. IE. You can stay just outside of prohibited areas and zoom in to film or shoot.

Both of the new drones went on sale today. The DJI Mavic 2 Pro starts at $1,449, and the DJI Mavic Zoom starts at $1,249. They both have some things in common; shoot 4K footage at up to 100 megabits per second, 8GB onboard storage (which can be increased via microSD), top speed of 44mph and offer a flight time of up to 31 minutes (depending on wind and conditions). A big improvement in the avoidance category, there are now 10 sensors, which is great to hear. Less crashing, more flying time and less down time. This has a lot to do with the new obstacle avoidance image transmission system using the DJI’s OcuSync 2.0. The last feature has to do with noise reduction as DJI is claiming these drones are quieter than ever.

If you have been watching your Twitter or Facebook feeds all summer you might’ve heard the Mavic 2 rumors. There were indeed some leaked photos and information leading up to the release today.
