If you’re arriving in Santorini by cruise ship and want a quick, easy, and scenic way to reach Fira town, or if you’d simply like to experience the stunning views from up high, the Cable Car is your perfect option! But before you hop on, here’s some helpful background information.

Years ago, the Old Port below Fira was Santorini’s main port. Up until the 1970s, the only way to reach Fira from there was by climbing 600 steep steps, either on foot or by mule. This climb posed challenges for the elderly, people with mobility issues, and those with heavy luggage. As tourism grew, the need for easier access became clear. This led to the construction of the cable car in 1982, funded entirely by the Loula and Evangelos Nomikos Foundation, established by local benefactor Evangelos Nomikos.

Today, the cable car is an essential part of Santorini’s tourism infrastructure, owned equally by the island’s 14 communities. It provides an efficient link between the Old Port and Fira, with a portion of its earnings supporting mule owners to honor their contribution to Santorini’s culture.

The cable car’s gondola-style carriages, designed by the renowned Doppelmayr® Company, can transport up to 1,200 people per hour, with each 5-minute ride offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea, the Caldera, and the volcano. The station is conveniently located near the Archaeological Museum in Fira, making it easily accessible from the main path that starts at the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral. Enjoy the ride and soak in the incredible scenery from 220 meters above the sea!

Important Things to Know

There are usually long queues on the days that cruise ships are visiting the island, so arm yourself with patience and get ready to face long waiting times in order to board the Cable Car.

Please note that on very windy days, the cable cars are shut down in order to secure the safety of the passengers. During those days, the safest way to reach the Old Port is by walking down the steps or on a donkey ride.

Either way, the stunning views are guaranteed!
