Ever show up at the airport and realize your ID is sitting on the kitchen counter? 😬
The TSA might soon have a solution — but it’s going to cost you. This holiday season, the government is giving the gift of a Real ID fee. Much like red light cameras, it’s an easy money grab!
The Backstory
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) began enforcing Real ID requirements earlier this year, finally putting an end to those endless extensions. Now they’re taking it a step further: if you show up to security without a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or an approved alternative (like your passport or Global Entry card), you might still be able to board your flight… for $18.
The Fine Print
According to documents filed with the Federal Register, the TSA plans to roll out a “modernized identity verification program.” Translation: they’ll use biometric scans and extra screening to verify your identity — but the fee helps cover the extra time and tech.
Here’s the breakdown:
💵 Fee: $18
⏱️ Valid for: 10 days (covers round-trips or weeklong vacations)
🚫 Refunds: None — even if TSA can’t verify your ID
🧑💼 Optional: Technically yes, but your only other option is not to fly
In other words: no Real ID, no passport, no problem… if you’re willing to pay up.
Who This Affects
For most travelers, this won’t change anything.
If you already carry a Real ID, passport, or trusted traveler card, you’re good to go.
But for:
Travelers who lost or forgot their ID,
Those still waiting on Real ID renewals, or
Occasional flyers who rely on standard driver’s licenses,
this new rule could mean paying $18 just to get through security.
Why the Change?
TSA calls it the “next step” in tightening airport security while keeping lines moving. With Real ID enforcement officially in effect, the agency wants a consistent (and fast) backup system. The biometric check will likely scan your face and cross-reference federal databases to verify who you are.
Basically, this fee turns what used to be a “we’ll let you through this one time” favor into a paid process, aka money grab.
This comes during a big year of change for TSA. The agency:
Ended the long-standing shoe-removal rule for some travelers in standard security,
Is testing new biometric lanes at major airports, and
Continues to explore the long-rumored end of the 3-1-1 liquids rule (not gone yet, unfortunately).
I get it — it’s easy to forget your ID when you’re juggling boarding passes, camera gear, and coffee. But $18 just to get through security? That’s a steep “oops” fee.
So I want to ask… why ar biometrics not in place yet instead of a plastic ID? Why isn’t there standardization at all airports throughout the USA? Where are all the taxes and fees that I pay for an airline ticket not upgrading airport security at a faster pace?
Real ID enforcement is only going to get stricter — so if you haven’t upgraded your license yet, do it soon so you can travel.
