The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) is not only Lucerne’s most iconic landmark but also one of the most famous and photographed sights in all of Switzerland so you should make sure to include it in your one day in Lucerne, Switzerland plans!
Built in 1333, this historic wooden bridge stretches diagonally across the Reuss River, connecting Lucerne’s Old Town to the newer part of the city. Originally constructed as part of the city’s fortifications, the bridge served both a defensive and practical purpose—protecting Lucerne from attacks while allowing passage across the river. Today, it stands as a proud symbol of the city’s medieval heritage and resilience.
What makes the Chapel Bridge truly special is its painted triangular panels that hang beneath the roof along the walkway. Added in the 17th century, these paintings depict scenes from Swiss history, local legends, and the lives of Lucerne’s patron saints, St. Leodegar and St. Maurice. While a devastating fire in 1993 destroyed much of the bridge and many of the original paintings, the people of Lucerne rallied to restore it within just a year. About 30 of the 100+ paintings were saved and carefully preserved, blending the bridge’s storied past with its modern restoration.
At the center of the bridge stands the Wasserturm (Water Tower), an octagonal stone tower that predates the bridge itself. Over the centuries, it has served as a watchtower, treasury, archive, and even a prison. Today, it’s one of the most photographed structures in Switzerland and offers a fascinating glimpse into Lucerne’s medieval past.

The Stoosbahn funicular, located near the town of Schwyz, is the steepest funicular railway in the world, climbing at an incredible 110% gradient (47.7° incline). The journey from the valley station in Schlattli up to the car-free mountain village of Stoos takes only about 5 minutes, offering jaw-dropping views over lush green valleys and snow-dusted peaks.
Once at the top, hikers can choose from a variety of trails ranging from easy panoramic walks to more challenging summit routes. The most famous is the Stoos Ridge Hike (Gratwanderung Stoos), a breathtaking trail between Klingenstock and Fronalpstock. This ridge walk is often considered one of the most beautiful in Switzerland, with sweeping 360° views of 10 lakes, the Swiss Alps, and the central Swiss plateau. The hike typically takes 2–3 hours one way and can be done in either direction, though many prefer to take the chairlift up Klingenstock and hike to Fronalpstock for the most dramatic vistas.
